Transrectal ultrasonography for evaluation of various benign and malignant prostatic lesions and their histopathological correlation
R Malik, VK Pandya, D Naik
April-June 2004, 14(2):155-157
To study the transrectal ultrasonographic findings in benign and malignant prostatic lesions with respect to its site, echopattern, capsular status, local invasion and their histopathological correlation. Material and Method: A total of 100 patients with clinical suspicion of prostatic disease were examined by transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) followed by their histopathological correlation to study the sensitivity and specificity of transrectal ultrasonography for diagnosis of carcinoma prostate. Result and conclusion: The sensitivity and specificity of TRUS for diagnosis of carcinoma prostate was found to be 86.96 percent and 71.43 percent respectively. The relative low specificity reflects the difficulty of interpretation of lesion and overlapping echogenic pattern. The percentage of false negative was 13.04 percent and the percentage of false positive was 28.57 percent.

NEW TECHNIQUES AND PHYSICS
Multislice CT : A quantum leap in whole body imaging
SK Jatava
April-June 2004, 14(2):209-216
Multislice CT (MSCT) is a specialized CT system equipped with a multiple detector array that simultaneously obtains tomographic data at different siice locations. MSCT provides unparalleled capabilities for detailed analysis of normal and abnormal anatomy and pathology. MSCT facilitates a wide range of clinical applications ranging from 3D imaging to perfusion imaging to CT Fluoroscopy. Having the capability of rapidly scanning large longitudinal volume of patient with high z-axis resolution and true isotropic voxel generation, it offers new challenges and applications, not available hitherto with single-slice CT scanning. This article provides insight into the fundamental physical principles of multidetector CT and glimpse of its powerful capabilities in established and novel clinical applications at this present point of time.

VASCULAR IMAGING
Multispiral CT angiography of renal arteries of live potential renal donors : A review of 118 cases
A Kapoor, A Kapoor, G Mahajan, A Singh
April-June 2004, 14(2):199-203
Objectives -
Review of the angiographic data of 118 live kidney donors was done to assess the renal vessel anatomy, compare the findings with the per operative findings, to determine the sensitivity of Multislice CT angiography in the work up of live potential donors and finally to discuss and compare the results of the present study with the reported results using single slice CT, MR and conventional angiography.
Material and Methods :
Retrospective analysis of the angiographic data of 118 of prospective live kidney donors was done. All donors underwent renal angiography on Multistice CT scan using 50 cc IV Contrast with 1.25 mm slice thickness followed by MIP and VRT post processing algorithms. The number of vessels, vessel bifurcation, vessel morphology and venous anatomy was analysed and the findings compared with the surgical findings.
Results -
MSCTA showed clear delineation of the main renal arteries in all the donors with detailed vessel morphology. The study revealed 100% sensitivity in detection of accessory renal vessels which had a overall incidence of 26.67% with commonest distribution in the parahilar region.
Discussion-
The present study showed 100% sensitivity in the visualization and detection of main and accessory renal vessels. These results were comparable with conventional angiography which has so far been considered the gold standard and were found superior to the use of SSCT, MR in the angiographic work up of liver renal donors. Due to improved detection of accessory vessels less than 2 mm in diameter a higher incidence of aberrant vessels was seen on the right side as has been suggested so far.
