Hon'ble guest, dignitaries on the dias, fellow members, ladies & gentlemen.

First I would like to offer my prayer to Lord Ganesha .

Vakrartunda mahakay, Suryakoti Samaprabha

Nirvighna Kurveda, Sarvakarya Susarvada.

It is with a sense of great happiness and pride that I stand before you occupying the highest position that any member can achieve in our Indian Radiological & Imaging Association. I express my deep gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all of you. Fifth of Jan. 2001, will remain a red-letter day in my life. On this occasion I would like to give the credit of my success to my wife Dr. Aruna a renowned pathologist of our city. Her encouragement, enthusiasm & sacrifice brought me this honour.

I am sure with the cooperation of all of you, which I have been getting in the past I will be able to serve the Association to the best of my ability. I am deeply conscious of my responsibilities of this office and I am confident that I will be getting your guidance and cooperation at every step.

Membership and Its Might

Our association started with 24 members on roll in Calcutta. We often say with legitimate pride that our mighty organization has grown up to 4000 members. Mighty? Yes, but where does Might lie? Does the Government consult us? Do they seek our opinion on various matters? Do the policy making bodies like Medical Council of India consult us ? Does the Government look into our resolutions passed every year at our Annual meeting? We must make our presence felt for getting our views heard and ensure that our views are given due weightage. There is lack of communication between the Government authorities and IRIA. In our country where one who shouts the loudest is likely to be heard the most; it is imperative that we assert ourselves on all policy matters relating to radiology. The strength and solidarity of the Association should be such that no policy decision can be implemented by any agency without our approval and support; then only we can play a meaningful role.

Though it is encouraging to note that our membership is crossing 4000, we have to take cognizance of the fact that the radiologists in equal number of our membership have still not been brought within our fold. Why? We are able to do little by way of Indian Journal Of Radiology , number of CMEs and sorting their equipment problems through Trade Grievances Cell . It is high time that the association takes interest in the professional rights and privileges of member at large.

Advancement

Three decades ago radiology was the last option for the postgraduate students and now Radio Diagnosis is the first option for doing post-graduation. We are very fortunate to belong to an era of unprecedented growth of imaging technologies. We are again very fortunate to witness Roentgen Centenary and the new millennium and I will call this time as a Diamond era in Radiology & Imaging. Fantastic change, Change is the law of life and change for the benefit of ailing humanity is all the more a precious change. After spiral CT, Digital Imaging, Functional MR, Tele Radiography, now is the era of Interventional Radiology. It has opened new avenues in the life of radiologists.

Present technology is attracting younger radiologists to new imaging modalities. They are not paying much attention to Conventional Radiology. It is not out of place to quote the opinion of renowned authorities that in today's era, to read plain x-ray chest is the most difficult for which there is no substitute till date. I appeal to the younger generation to please concentrate on conventional aspects first and then proceed to the technology of their choice.

Cross Specialty Practice

The modality of Ultrasound is being invaded by other specialties and unless we rise to the occasion to curb this cross specialty practice, we may lose our relevance. Friends keep Interventional, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiology in your territory. I appeal to all radiologists to keep this field in their own domain and let it not go in to the hands of other clinical super specialties. If we do not use our expertise, I am apprehensive that many sections of Interventional Radiology might be snatched by other super specialties in time to come. Then, at that stage, we should not grumble on witnessing Interventional Radiology in other super speciality departments.

Abolition Of Quackery

Growing simplicity in the operation of modern X-ray equipment, sophistication and glamour of the profession has resulted in encroachment upon our specialty by many non-radiologists and others. It has become a fashion to establish X-ray clinics. There is an increased tendency to practice Radiology by people without requisite qualification & training. It is high time that necessary steps be taken to stop injudicious use of these modalities. I strongly advocate that, ` RADIOLOGY BIL' be passed to check this quackery for the betterment of ailing humanity.

Abuse Of Imaging

I am very sorry to remark about the abuse of Imaging technologies like Ultrasound by our radiologists, which is unethical, immoral, illegal and must be condemned. Of course you understand what I mean. I make another appeal to all my radiology colleagues to stop the abuse of radiology practice. We have to ban this at our level. We do not want the Government to interfere and impose a ban on us. Friends, please stop this at our level. We have lot of ways for our bread & butter and survival.

Trade & Health Care Industry

We are dependent on trade for the best of equipment. After sale services needs attention and Trade have to provide better maintenance services. Annual maintenance contracts are very high and they should be reduced. I would like to make an appeal to the Health Care Industries to market their products only to radiologists and those centres where the services of radiologists are available. This will help for better services to ailing humanity.

Iria House

We are proud of having our own building in a prime location at New Delhi. We have not been able to utilize this building for the welfare of our members from the last 3 years. During my tenure I will make my effort to ensure that the building is utilized by our members for their stay when they are in New Delhi on nominal charges. There are about 12 rooms, which can be used for the stay. The nominal earnings will meet the requirement of the maintenance of the building and the office. I need your cooperation to reform the Building Management Cell.

We have to get our Journal Indexed and to improve it more to bring it to international standard. There are lot of teaching programs going on at an individual level, at the state level and at the level of Indian College of Radiology & Imaging. We have to coordinate different teaching programs and bring them under academic wing, Indian College of Radiology & Imaging. The record of the College and the Central Office needs up dating in the present era of computerization. Family Benefit Scheme could not attract many members. We have to review the policy on this aspect. Friends, lot has to be done; but it needs your constructive and active participation.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I hope I have not disappointed you with a long address, but I am sure you would appreciate that the need of the day is to face the hard facts of life and to come to terms with reality. Let us pause and ponder .

Now we must identify necessary resources and move in a peaceful and coordinated manner to achieve them. We have the privilege of belonging to one of the noble professions and as such, we must set the pace and show the way.
"Travelers, there are no paths,

Paths are to be made"

So dear friends let us set out to make them.

Jai IRIA.

Universe Operates On Dynamic Exchanges,

Let Us Exchange Love, Peace & Friendship.
