Didier Buthian, David Khayat (eds.) : CT AND MR1 IN ONCOLOGY. New York: Spriner Verlag, 1998 413pgs. ISBN: 3-540-62750-2

This short text-book on role of CT and MRI in oncology is edited by two authors and contributed by several oncologists, more of whom are French. The book reaches a level of an authority simply because of a large number of contributors (131 to be precise), as all of them have added their rich experience in the making of this book.

The book gives basics of CT and MRI in a nutshell, as far as the physics and image production and contrast media are concerned. Then there are several chapters (43) dealing with only neoplastic lesions of various organs and systems. Each chapter gives a clear account of clinical, pathological and imaging features, and supports the text with excellent images. At many places relevant anatomy, indications, types of investigations and appropriate tumoral classification are also added.

Chapter No. 40 deals with investigating a problem of disseminated growth from an unknown primary. This is indeed a very tricky and enigmatic situation, that all clinicians have to face.

Last chapters (42, 44 and 45) are devoted to progress in helical CT in oncology, recent advances in MRI, MR Angiography, and 3-D reconstruction, which are special features of this book to make itself, a complete guide to an oncologist. Virtual endoscopic images of helical CT displayed in these chapters are most impressive.

I would recommend this book to all oncologists to keep themselves updated with modern diagnostic imaging in their speciality.
